When a mom leaves the hospital with her baby in her arms, she wants to make sure it's protected in every way possible.
For this reason, many prepare before they are born and learn to change their diaper or give them their first baths, while others prefer to follow the recommendations of their mothers or grandmothers.
One of those tips that has been passed down from generation to generation is to put gloves on newborns. In fact, some moms pack them in the suitcase they take to the hospital on the day of delivery, so their daughter or son can use them right out of the box.
But have you ever wondered why babies wear gloves? Or, more importantly: is it really necessary for them to use them?
We'll explore these questions below, so read to the end for the information.
There are two main reasons this is done: their little hands are very cold and they scratch their faces easily.
Healthline explains that most babies' extremities (arms, legs, hands, and feet) are cooler than the rest of their bodies.
This is mainly because they do very little physical activity and don't yet develop good blood circulation. Some may even have red or blue hands without this representing a serious health problem.
However, some mothers fear that their little one or little one is too cold and that's why they put gloves on them.
It's also worth noting that babies' fingernails grow quickly and are sharper than anyone imagines, notes Healthline.
Combined with the fact that they still don't control their movements, it often results in the occasional scratch on their face.
This is where baby mittens come back into action. By covering their hands, parents prevent accidental injuries.
Some choose to put socks on their hands for the same purpose.
So far, these pieces sound like a great option, don't they?
Well, some pediatricians advise against its use completely. Natasha Burgert, a physician at the American Academy of Pediatrics, says that, in most cases, they are not necessary.
For starters, there's no evidence that cold hands bother or bother newborns. In addition, cutting or filing your nails is very easy and simple, so if it is done frequently, scratches on your face are completely avoided.
Dr. Paula Arruda, from Pediatranaweb, adds that by putting gloves on newborns, they are deprived of exploring the world by touch, so she recommends removing them, especially if you are at home.
