South Korean social satire "Parasite" won the Best Picture Oscar on Sunday and made history by becoming the first non-English language film to receive the film industry's highest honor.
Tackling the gap between rich and poor in modern Seoul, "Parasite" won four Oscars in total, including Best Director and Best Screenplay for Bong Joon Ho, as well as Best Foreign Film.
“I never thought I would win,” Bong said as he accepted the award for best director, paying tribute to the other nominees in the category. "I would like to have a Texas chainsaw and split the Oscar into five and share it with all of you," he added.
Joaquin Phoenix won his first Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of a clown made famous by violence in a dark comic book tale "Joker," and gave an impassioned speech on climate change and animal rights.
Renee Zellweger received a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of adult Judy Garland in the musical biopic "Judy."
The World War I film "1917" won three Oscars, for cinematography, special effects and sound editing, while "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" brought first prize for supporting actor to Brad Pitt, who played the role of a relaxed stuntman.
Laura Dern received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, her first Academy Award, for her role as a ruthless divorce lawyer in "Marriage Story."
Netflix's "The Irishman," a pricey saga directed by Martin Scorsese that came with 10 Oscar nominations, came up empty.
The satire on Nazism "Jojo Rabbit" won an award for Best Adapted Screenplay for writer-director Taika Waititi. Meanwhile, "ToyStory 4" was chosen as Best Animated Feature.
"American Factory," about the fall of jobs in the industrial belt of the Midwest of the United States of the new production company of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, won an Oscar for Best Documentary.
Despite not having a formal host, the Oscars kicked off with a surprise appearance by former award hosts Steve Martin and Chris Rock, who made jokes about the lack of black and female directors in this year's nominations. .
