History of a marriage is a sensitive and incisive portrait of the Oscar -nominated filmmaker, Noah Baumbach, about a marriage that breaks and a family that remains united.
Boy meets girl. They fall in love, they get married, they have a son ... love ends.Noah Baumbach's new film begins with postcards of a romance but soon goes down to the earth and the harsh reality: this is not the story of a marriage but of its end.Baumbach was inspired by the divorce of his parents for the film that placed him under the radar, a story by Brooklyn (2007), while for which his best work is probably to date, the filmmaker has left for his separation from theThat his wife was 8 years, actress Jennifer Jason Leigh.
The conflict is the same but the point of view is different: we no longer attend the collapse through the gaze of a teenager, but in the first person and from the opposite sides of the trench.
At first Nicole and Charlie want to separate in a friendly way, but the old grudges, reproaches, disagreements, and everything acquires a new dimension when the lawyers come into play come into play soon when the lawyers come into play. The portrait that is made of them is fierce, showing them as scavengers who compartmentally compartment their life and work: in court they go directly to the jugular to destroy their opponent, but outside of it they take a fable regardless of the reguero of victimsThey leave behind.
History of a marriage is quite equanimous by showing that both he and she holds her truth, her reasons and her mistakes. It will not cost us too much to understand both, the reasons why they fell in love and the reasons for their separation, and therefore, see them argue in an impressive and verbally violent scene, it hurts us as if it were our own parents.
Much of the merit that history of a marriage is such an immersive experience is from Baumbach, both for a solid script that alternates drama and comedy with a shallow naturalness and for its excellent direction of actors. On few occasions, Scarlett Johansson has been as well used as here.It overflows emotion and character and maintains a chemical electric with Adam Driver that is born from discrepancy. He, being one of the best actors in his generation, is more immense as his character becomes more and more in despair.
No one who has seen Big Little Lies will catch him by surprise what Laura Dern does, but that does not go against elegance, claw and charisma with whom she embraces her ruthless lawyer character. The contributions of Alan Alda, Merritt Wever, Ray Liotta and others are significant, because they all enjoy moments of show.Driver's is a song and a collapse, those of Johansson and Dern, two monologues as well written as interpreted.
History of a marriage has very funny moments but ends up sitting like a beating. You can only put a great but: what at first seems like a joint and equanimous proposal ends up focusing on its point of view, while it is diluted and is relegated to the background. It is understandable to some extent, because it is still Baumbach's story about his own divorce process and, at least, Johansson's character is never blurred thanks to the first section of the film belonging to her.
The melodic soundtrack composed of Randy Newman is as ironic as the title of a film that its director has shot accentuating through the image the increasingly deep emotional distance of its protagonist partner.
History of a marriage is, in short, the Kramer against Kramer (1979) of those who, instead of protecting ourselves in aspirational romances, we grew up with forgetting me!(2004), Revolutionary Road (2008), (500) days Together (2009) and Her (2013) as referents: We have stopped believing in happy finals, but at least, we continue to enjoy the trip.
