"The films intersect with your life": Ariel Winograd and Leonardo Sbaraglia undertake a trip in search of fatherhood

-The movie filmed a long time ago and a few things happened before the premiere.How do they live this moment?

Winograd: -All it sounds weird at this time.Making a movie is a collective act and seeing it too.I always believed in that.Unfortunately, reality tells us that it is a habit that was lost and you have to reconstruct it little by little.We have to see movies on screens that exceed 50 inches.Or the 70s, with a little more luck.And I do not say it only for a matter of health: there are sanitary passes, the vaccination is lucky to be high and it is demonstrated that going to the cinema is safe and does not spread.

-How are things: if you summon people today to see today the world is fixed, I would encourage me to say that seven out of ten would ask them on which platform is this.

Sbaraglia: -In my case something very curious happens.Recently another movie of mine, wandering heart, much smaller and very interesting, which is now available in HBO Max.I do not fully understand how platforms work, because Amazon, with the Maradona series, did a very strong job of dissemination.But at the same time I had to do a series that I enjoyed a lot called Félix, directed by Cesc Gay, Truman's, and it turns out that nobody saw it and I don't know when it will come here.I would love to be seen and I don't know how to do it.

Winograd: - The important thing is that today the world is fixed, all this pandemic time could be kept so that it can be seen in the cinema.We are in the middle of an uncertain change process and it is clear that the idea of the big screen competes with the idea of other screens, represented by the platforms.At some point I think everything is going to balance.Meanwhile, this film is functioning as an act of resistance and it is very good that it be so, without detracting everything the platforms contributed.What would have been us in Pandemia without them?I could see Mad men and a lot of other series completely completely.

-Have you worked together before?

Sbaraglia: -We did a Peugeot commercial who used the characters of wild stories.But before there were several almost ... I almost made wine to steal and I almost made my first wedding.The third time was the charm.

Winograd: -I wish it is the first of many.They will see here a Leonardo Sbaraglia that I had not seen so far, moving between comedy and tragic.I know his career very well and this is a new facet for him.They will be surprised.

-How did you model your character, Leo?

-Ean experience is different.We were rehearsing and the character rhythm being.To interpret Samarás I was clinging to the director's energy.Like Wino, the Greek is a guy who never for.It is someone who makes cinema with a lot of self -confidence, a lot of precision and a lot of trade.Knows how to make a very empathic cinema, conceived for the general public.

Winograd: -We laugh a lot and we understood each other very well.We work very comfortable.It is a film built as a trip, in the paper moon style, which puts all its elements at the service of the climax that is lived in the end.I always say that if you do not get excited in that end you have no feelings.I saw it 300 times since we filmed it and the same thing always happens to me: I start crying.

-He is talking about this film like the closing of a trilogy.

Winograd: -I had not thought about it until now, but I see that without children, Mom went on a trip and this film talk about paternity, and each one touches a different key on the same subject.Each has its tone and emotional depth, and also all three were written by Mariano Vera.In the first one a father hides his daughter to his new partner;In the second, a father who has many children turns out that he is not connected with any, and in the third we see a father with a son who turns out that he is not his.It could be said that it closes a trilogy, but it will not be the last.I'm going to keep making films about parents.

-Did you have to live closely or to know in real life situations like those who live in the movie the leading character?

Sbaraglia: -The most interesting is that it helps us to reflect on fatherhood.Family paradigms are changing a lot, for example.And there are people who without being parents of blood become huge references of that type.I have a daughter and I keep asking all the time questions about what it means to be a father.What to say, how to give him freedom and teach him at the same time the basic values to move in life, for example.

Winograd: -These stories call me a lot as a father.I am very interested in the different forms of relationship with our children and how these links are changing with age.

SBARAGLIA: -In some point the movies intersect with your life.When I was separating from who my partner was for 20 years I made two films, the field and outdoor, and a TV program, in therapy, which talked about separations.Obviously they were things that questioned me.Now I have to make this movie and wandering heart, which shows the very rare relationship of a gay father with his 20 -year -old daughter.Two films about paternity.

-How is it to work in a movie with a boy?

SBARAGLIA: -Fer any link with the other actors and actresses always demands a lot of patience.But when working with a boy, patience has to be even bigger.Benjamin is not an actor, who can be at age nine?I had to make scenes in the morning with twice the boy and in the afternoon the kid was coming and we did the general plans.We have advanced luckily with the rights of the boys who act, who now have less work hours, but that is completely changing the dynamics.

Winograd: -Leo's work with Benjamin has a part that looks and another that does not.Sometimes you have to wait, wait and keep waiting.That is why he talks about patience.The entire shooting plan is organized from the needs and schedules of the boy, which luckily did not get sick.It can be exhausting, but the result is very satisfactory.

Sbaraglia: -Benjamin is a potential talent.It has an impressive presence on the screen.It's great.

Winograd: -And in the movie it looks quite cold.It is difficult to achieve and very logical, because of the tragedy that the character crosses.I like that today the world is a more difficult movie to explain that Mom went on a trip.

-In the movie, the male characters do not generally come out very well stopped.

Sbaraglia: -Al Greek presents it from the beginning as a rather unhealthy, insensitive, selfish character, which has no record of the sensitivity of others.He puts on a shield and goes forward.Someone who saw the movie commented that I had very well the television producer character very well.They are exactly like that in real life, he told me.Without generalizing, of course, there is something in the world of TV that is behind the success and numbers that make you lose the sensitivity of others.But the Greek is not a cold man, he is someone passionate about what he does.

Winograd: -I hadn't thought like that, but it's true.Mario Alarcón's characters, Diego Peretti and Gerardo Romano, from that place, always move on the edge.They are not the best types in the world.But they make their contribution to everything good and emotional that happens in the end.

-What are you now?

Sbaraglia: -I'm filming suffocated, Luciano Podcaminsky's spring opera, which emerged from Armando Bó producer, rebolution.It takes almost all the time on a ship and I make an audiovisual producer.It was going to end before the end of the year, but they realized by the pandemic that it was impossible to film it there.Then I have to work on a large Netflix project, the Spanish version of Birdbox, with Mario Casas.I return and I'm going to Montevideo to complete the ship's movie.I also made in Spain for Movistar Plus a series directed by Pau Freixas, everyone lies, with Juan Diego Botto, Ernesto Alterio and Natalia Verbeke.But I am working longer here in Argentina than there.I also expect a second season of the Maradona series.Everything is not yet defined, but I think there will be more Guillermo Coppola from me.

Winograd: -In February, premiere a series that I made in Mexico for HBO Max called Las Bravas and develops in the world of women's football.And in March I begin to film a new film for Viacom International Studios that I cannot reveal absolutely anything.

The influence of Peter Bogdanovich

From the beginning, Ariel Winograd took Luna de Papel (Paper Moon, 1973) as one of the great references of what is told today.The mention of one of Peter Bogdanovich's best films, another endearing story between parents and children, acquires a new meaning from these days from the feeling of the director, on January 6.
